S2RadVal Team
The S2RadVal project team includes ACRI-ST as prime contractor and its partners NPL and Rayference.
ACRI-ST is an independent SME of the Space sector, specialised in the prototyping and engineering of EO data processors, data quality check systems, end-to-end and sensors’ simulations, calibration & validation, data processing, archiving and distribution:
- Research and study activities related to numerical modelling and simulation of physical phenomena applied to environmental issues (ocean and atmosphere modelling, numerical fluid dynamics, geophysics, …);
- Engineering activities for the specification, development and validation of data processing of Earth Observation systems and in particular end to end simulators, instrument simulators, ground processing prototypes and operational instrument processing facilities;
- Operations in the frame of payload data ground segments, mission performance centres, collaborative exploitation platforms, etc.
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is a world-leading centre in the development and application of highly accurate measurement techniques. As the UK’s national standards laboratory, NPL underpins the national measurement system, ensuring consistency and traceability of measurements throughout the UK (and many other institutes around the world). It ensures international equivalence of the SI through representation (as the UK delegates) in committees related to the meter convention and participation within formal comparisons. NPL offers a unique range of measurement services, contract research, consultancy and training services. Other areas of expertise include the design and characterisation of engineering materials and mathematical software, especially its application to measurement and instrumentation.
In the context of Earth Observation, NPL has been developing best practices guidance in conjunction with the community for detailed but generic Cal/Val activities, with specific organisations for particular measurement issues, and more recently the guidelines to support the QA4EO, which is gradually being adopted by ESA and other space agencies.
Rayference is an Earth Observation R&D company led by Yves Govaerts providing technical and scientific expertise in 1D and 3D radiative transfer, both in the atmosphere and at the surface, and inverse modelling. This expertise is applied in areas such as retrieval of aerosol and surface properties from space observations, vicarious calibration, fundamental and thematic climate data record generation or sensitivity analyses for the preparation of new space missions and associated services.
